Coupons - Are they worth the effort?

August 26th, 2007 at 09:37 pm

People often do not realize the benefit of using coupons. Most families can save a good deal of money off their grocery bill with the use of coupons. Are they worth the effort, yes! Learn how to save the most with your coupons.

Check the coupon policies for the grocery stores in your area. Try to shop at a grocery store that will double the face value of a coupon. In our area some of our grocery stores will double the face value of a coupon to .50 cents. This means if I use a .50 coupon on an item and the item costs $1.00 or more, they will take $1.00 off the price of the item. If that item costs less then $1.00 I will get it free.

If the items you can get for free or almost free are items you will not use, you can give them to charity, give them out as gifts, or trade them on the bargains forum or the stockpile forum. A nice gift idea is to create a themed basket full of your unwanted items. An example would be a gift basket full of all baby products for a baby shower gift.

Watch your sale papers and try to buy your items when they are on sale. Use your coupons on the sale item when it is on sale and always shop at a store that will double that coupon. This gives you three ways to save on an item.
1. It's on sale when you buy it
2. You used your coupon to buy it when it was on sale
3. You shopped at a store that doubled that coupon

Be sure to check your grocery stores for extra savings such as in store points programs and reward programs where you earn points which later can be redeemed for free stuff.

Enjoy the savings!

I'm kind of hit and miss with coupons. None of our stores double them, though they will let you use a store coupon with a manufacturer's coupon. I find the best luck with the coupons that print out at the cash register, or the ones that are good for $10 off if you spend $50. I have often found that other brands are cheaper than the on sale brand even with the coupon. Sometimes I think they jack up the price of an item when they know there is a coupon out for something, too. Which kind of sucks, because I'd love for them to be more worthwhile around here.

I don't know how to live without coupons now.

Yes, coupons that print out at the register are good.

If you look at the sale papers sometimes you will also find that not only do grocery stores double coupons, some will even triple them. Our Meijers store has tripled them up to .35 value on certain days. That's .35 x 3 = $1.05 off an item.

If you get alot of free items trade or sell them for free on the refundsweepers stockpiles forum or bargains forum.

Our smaller grocery stores try to get customers in by double coupons up to and including $1 value. That means $2 off an item when they will double the $1 coupon. Usually that item comes out free.

    Good luck with the savings!!!

Yesterday, I checked the ads and found that another store had cat food that I had a coupon for. The cat food regularly sells for $4.49. The store had it on sale for $3.49. I had a coupon for $3.00, so it could have cost me $.49 in the end. But, I take the coupon money and apply it to the $20 Savingss Challenge. But the 349 was still a good buy.

I agree with your point! By using coupons we can save our money. For online shopping ,I personally used coupon codes. My favorite site for shopping is CouponAlbum. It offers many coupons and deals for money saving shoppings.

Way to go Aleta. That's the best way to shop to save the most with your coupons.
Find the item on sale in your sale papers
Take the coupon to use on the sale product
Try to shop at double coupon stores

I have noticed that often our stores have the items on sale within one to three weeks from the time the coupons come out in the Sunday paper. So cut your coupons right out of the Sunday paper so you are ready if a sale occurs within a week from you getting the coupon.

Thank you for the tips. I have noticed that there are definite cycles. It seems that most of the stores will have the same brands on sale at the same time. You just have to wait it out.
